AMA holds a lively acoustic music jam every Saturday at Potwin Presbyterian Church. It's a wonderful way to enjoy the chemistry of playing with others in a supportive, friendly environment. Here you can learn new material, new styles, and generally stretch your skills.
We take turns leading songs, and all present are invited to join in, following the lead of the song-picker.
This jam is best suited to intermediate level musicians.
Expectations:
- When it's your turn to lead, you are free to pass.
- If you're leading a song, it should be one that you can play without needing to read chords. In other words, if it's too hard for you to play without reading chords, it's probably too hard for others to play spontaneously. It's OK to read lyrics.
- Song styles that work well in this jam are bluegrass, folk, country, soft rock, blues, and celtic.
- Instruments that routinely fit well in this jam are guitar, mandolin, dobro, banjo, string bass, harmonica, and fiddle. No electric instruments, please.
- This is not a "singers' jam" where instruments are simply accompanyment for a sing-along. Our emphasis is on playing instruments. For our purposes, voices are additional instruments . Think about when and where adding your voice will help the song. Harmony parts are valued.
- Listen louder than you play.
- If you arrive after our start time (3pm), make sure your instrument is tuned before you arrive (or step into another room to do the tuning).
- We aim to do as much playing as we can comfortably fit into the available time, so please keep conversation brief between songs.
- Bring a smile, a willingness to take a risk, and compassion for yourself and others when goofs happen.
Park in the lot to the south of the church on 5th Street. Enter through the church's south door, and go down the stairs to your left. The door is straight ahead. |
